Book Vocabulary

Apocalypse: An event involving destruction or damage on an awesome or catastrophic scale.

Photosynthesis: A process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy, normally from the Sun, into chemical energy that can be later released to fuel the organisms’ activities.

Filigree: Ornamental work of fine (typically gold or silver) wire formed into delicate tracery that is inspired by the decorative quality that is found in nature.

Fungi: Any of a group of spore-producing organisms like mushrooms, molds and yeast that feed on natural products of the earth. In the book Harlie talks about a specific kind of fungus that lives in the soil with roots known as mychorrhizae

Mycorrhizae: A fungus that grows in association with the roots of a plant in a symbiotic relationship.

Symbiotic relationship: A relationship when two different species “work together,” each benefiting from the relationship. One example of a mutualistic relationship is that of the oxpecker (a kind of bird) and the rhinoceros or zebra. A fun book to read about this is Weird Friends
